Sipping on herbal tea may slow down the ALDH process and could possibly prolong the hangover. Ginger or Peppermint Tea. Ethanol is know to bring on headaches due to the chemical acetate. Cellini cautions, “coffee further dehydrates you and is acidic, but it will force adrenaline up which will give you a false energy boost.” It’s best to take precaution when it comes to drinking coffee and painkillers together. Bonus tip: Cellini’s recommended hangover cure, the “p. H Shot,” contains: kale(1 cup) + lemon (1/2 without rind) + ginger root(thumb size) + 1/4 cucumber + 1/4 cup pineapple + 3oz water. Having been highlighted, on the world stage, by famous guide books ? Some of these have since gone to the wall, as they deserved, but a few of them still exist today. Outside of the new five star hotels . It started quietly; a couple of good Cantonese restaurants, the two young Australians that built a beach house north of Seminyak at the Petitenget Temple, the French boys who looked after the catering at the wonderful Bali Bird Park then moved into their own restaurant. Furthermore, the cost is a fraction of what you would pay, for the same quality of food, in any of the world's major cities. Most of the local eating- houses are either Chinese, Indonesian Chinese, Indonesian or the Halal . The Balinese must be one of the few world cultures for whom eating is not a social habit. At their many ceremonies everybody eats, more or less, together. And it is for such ceremonies that all of the great Balinese dishes are prepared. For any special ceremony, Babi Guling ! Everybody eats, by themself, whenever hungry. This is often no more than a handful of cold, already cooked, rice. If a couple of people get hungry at the same time, then of course they may all go off to a local warung to eat. Only, however, because they all wanted to eat, and not for any social significance. It is called Bumbu Bali, and has been very faithfully set up by the Hyatt's ex- chef, Heinz van Holzen. Others are quickly following, like the great little warung, Red Rice, up above Ubud at Sayan. However the dish that amazed most was a simple Salad of Roasted Vegetables, whilst that may not sound very exciting, in fact it is. The star of the mix was the slices of pumpkin . I am not a vegetarian but I could make a meal of this dish. A daring newcomer in the same area was Room 4 Dessert. Just desserts and cocktails in the building that once housed Ubud’s only nightclub, so no windows, very strange! Will Goldfarb was the pastry chef at Ku de ta, but has now taken up the challenge to do what no one so far has ever before been game to try! However with desserts such as Black Rice Pudding with rambutan, passion and chia seeds, Rum Soaked Brioche with milk jam, snakefruit ice and cashew nutella, and Armagnac refined camembert, langsat 'raisin' no- knead ciabatta, kemangi pesto and rosella he is certainly stretching the boundaries. If you're new here, check out our meal plan, our fitness plan, and our ebooks to help you get started with Paleo. Thanks for visiting! So you’ve started eating Paleo, and you’re a few days into it. You’re not feeling the amazing effects of the diet that so many others before you have, and in fact, you feel worse! Naturally you’re asking, “Is this really worth it?”Almost everyone who is on the Paleo Diet or similar plan has been right where you are—you are not alone. Here’s the scoop on what’s happening in your body. Why Do I Feel Worse After Going Paleo? For some, if you’ve drastically changed your diet or cut way back on carbs, processed foods, caffeine, or booze, unpleasant withdrawal effects may be setting in. This way of eating is pretty different than a Standard American Diet (SAD) and as a result, there are a lot of changes you’ll be making on multiple levels that will not go unnoticed by your body. It’s totally normal to experience a wide range of detox symptoms as your body undergoes this transition, and it’s definitely worth toughing it out to get to the other side! When you understand the reason why these terrible feelings are happening, you’ll actually have more insight into your total body health.(Read this: Everything You Need to Know About Detoxing)How to Tell if You’re Detoxing on Paleo. While the initial shock to the system isn’t pleasant, keep in mind that your body is finally getting a chance to clean out some built up toxins. Without all of the harmful foods constantly bombarding your liver and other organs, and with the addition of tons of nutrients and proteins from the fruits, vegetables, and meats you’re now eating, your body is going to take this opportunity to do some much needed cleaning, healing, and resetting. This purging is precisely what causes the symptoms you may be experiencing right now—the toxins are being dealt with instead of being suppressed. In the first three days to three weeks of going Paleo, you may (or may not) experience any of the following detox symptoms: Headaches. Fatigue. Dizziness. Irritability. Mood swings. Nausea. Intense cravings. Sinus drainage. Bowel changes. Diarrhea/Constipation. Flu- like symptoms. Brain fog. Increased urination. Increased appetite. Increased thirst. If you’ve given up drinking caffeine or alcohol, you should almost undoubtedly expect some withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine and alcohol are addictive substances, as most of us know, and your nervous and endocrine systems will need some time to re- boot. Now is a good time to warn your significant other/kids/co- workers that you might not be the sweetest, most congenial person for a few days. The benefits, however, when you get to the other side, will more than make up for it. How Long will the Dreaded Detox Last? For most, detox symptoms tend to appear within three to 1. Paleo, but for others they may take a few weeks to pop up, or you may never experience any of these at all! Most people only experience symptoms for a few days to a week, but others (especially the chronically ill) may feel icky for a month or more. There’s really no way of predicting how long your detoxification period will last, as it’s a highly individual process that depends largely on how much healing your body needs to accomplish. Don’t be disheartened, though. There are ways to not let the dreaded detox derail your Paleo plans. Coping with the Dreaded Detox. When I first went Paleo, I remember having to pee about 2. I was walking through oatmeal for the first three weeks. Walking up a flight of stairs was a big accomplishment. I was so tired and groggy—I just wanted to sleep, but then on the 2. I felt fantastic. Again, many people only experience symptoms for a few days to a week, and there’s really no way of predicting how long your detoxification period will last. There’s nothing wrong with you if yours lasts longer, and if you don’t have any at all, that’s great, too! If you’re one of the people who has some of these detox symptoms, there are two key ways to minimize them. Stay Hydrated. You’ll be doing yourself a big favor by keeping well hydrated during this time by drinking at least half of your body’s weight in pounds in ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 1. Read this: The Ultimate Guide to Paleo Drinks)2. Move Your Body. Getting regular exercise, even if it’s just a few minutes each day, can also help the body to speed the detox process along. This can be as simple as walking, taking the stairs, or doing a bit of yoga. I know that’s difficult to do when you’re already feeling tired and run down, but I promise it will be worth it.(Read this: The Benefits of Movement Over Working Out)The Positive Effects After the Detox Storm. During these difficult moments when you’re wondering whether this diet is hurting or helping you, remember that after the storm of detoxification subsides, you may very well experience: More energy. Emotional balance. Clarity of mind. Fat loss/muscle gain. Strength gains. Fewer aches and pains. Less inflammation. Less sinus congestion. Fewer seasonal allergy symptoms. Digestive ease. Clearer skin. Fewer colds. Fewer symptoms of chronic disease. And that is why you’ve chosen to do this! Stay strong and it will be worth it. Is It Just Me? You may experience a few (or many) detoxification symptoms, including intense cravings, headaches, and fatigue. Why? You probably removed a lot of toxins from your diet. These can include any of the following: Gluten and anti- nutrients (grains and legumes)Preservatives and other additives. Refined flours. Sugars and sweeteners. Dairy (which is more toxic to some than others)Since you’ve probably been eating these things your whole life, your body is going through some serious withdrawal. Gluten behaves like an opiate, and when we remove it from our diet, we can have actual withdrawals! The average human carries two to six pounds of bacteria in their body, which is somewhere around 1. When we don’t feed the bad bacteria the sugar they need to stay alive, they can (and do) make our cravings worse, at least for awhile. The cravings and irritability that we experience when we cut sugar from our diet (especially if our intake is reduced drastically) can be intense, and may also be largely influenced by the types of bacteria that we are hosting.(Read this: How to Choose the Right Probiotic)Burning Fat for Fuel. Another reason people feel lousy when they first start Paleo, is because on a cellular level, your mitochondria are learning to burn more fat for fuel. That is, your body is shifting away from using glucose (from carbs and protein) as its primary fuel source, towards using more ketones from fats. Be patient with your body (and your mitochondria!) because it can take several weeks for this transition to happen. If you have an overgrowth of bad bacteria in your gut, which you may not even be aware of, you might experience symptoms of bacterial/yeast “die- off” when you drastically reduce your carb intake. This creates a transient toxic state in the body otherwise known as the Herxheimer reaction (also known as “die- off”) which is thought to happen when toxins from the dying pathogens overwhelm the body’s ability to clear them out. It is likely the bad bacteria in your body screaming to stay alive. Fight through it and these feelings will pass. In the beginning, it’s also helpful to think of the Paleo diet as a cleanse, a detox, or a purging of sorts. Your body is finally getting a chance to clean out those built up toxins! This purging is exactly what causes the symptoms you may be experiencing right now—the toxins are in your circulation being dealt with, instead of being suppressed. It’s like when you do a good deep cleaning of your house. You turn it upside down before it looks immaculate. Support your Detox Organs with Paleo Foods. The major organs of detoxification are the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, and skin. If any one of these systems is sluggish, it can lead to a buildup of toxic chemicals that act as free radicals and can damage cells throughout the body. When your body is going through the natural detoxification process associated with a diet change, you especially want to make sure your detox organs are functioning at top notch. It doesn’t take a hard- core detox program to clean out your organs. In fact, incorporating specific foods into your Paleo diet can greatly enhance your body’s ability to naturally detoxify. Ways to Support Your Detox Organs Naturally. The Liver. The liver is considered the body’s largest organ of detoxification because it contains enzymes (collectively called the cytochrome P4. Sulfur- rich foods, such as garlic and broccoli, provide the building materials our cells need to make glutathione, the body’s “master antioxidant” utilized in phase two of detoxification. Other foods can help to support our liver detoxification enzymes as well.(Read this: 5 Paleo Foods to Support Your Liver)2. The Kidneys. Our kidneys are constantly filtering toxins and waste materials out of our blood and into the urine, making them the body’s most important organ of excretion. Ample hydration is absolutely essential for these processes and in fact, dehydration is the most common and damaging stressor to the kidneys. The Skin. Our skin is the largest organ in the human body and our first line of defense against the outside world. It’s also one of the main ways we purge toxins from our bodies, by sweating them out. Dry brushing (which involves using a natural bristle dry brush to brush the skin) can help to expedite the detox process. Be sure to brush towards the heart using long, quick strokes. Alternating between hot and cold water during your showers also helps to increase circulation, as do other forms of “contrast hydrotherapy.” Saunas, steam rooms, and detox baths can also help move the process of detoxification along quicker.(Read this: The Ultimate Guide to Clean Skincare)4. Parnate and Weight Loss . A common side effect of MAOI antidepressants is loss of appetite, which can lead to weight loss. This is strikingly different from newer antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, the side effect profiles of which often include weight gain. Complicating matters is the fact that MAOI inhibitors cannot be taken with certain foods, such as chocolate, wine and aged cheeses, as a dangerous spike in blood pressure may occur. Parnate, generic name tranylcypromine, is a powerful antidepressant that works by increasing the concentration of the neurotransmitters serotonin, epinephrine and norepinephrine in the brain. Because of the special dietary restrictions, serious side effects and availability of newer antidepressants, Healthy. Place. com reports that MAOI antidepressants are typically prescribed only after all other antidepressants have failed. Although those taking Parnate require close medical supervision, they may find that it gives them relief they were unable to get with other antidepressant medications. According to PDRHealth. Parnate. Other side effects include fatigue, weakness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, chills, dry mouth, decreased urination and impotence. Less common but more serious side effects include vision problems, sensitivity to light, increased heart rate, swelling of feet and ankles, easy bruising or bleeding, neck stiffness, confusion, loss of coordination, fainting and muscle tremors. You should see your doctor immediately if you experience any of the serious side effects. Increased appetite, particularly for carbohydrates, are common with newer antidepressants like Paxil and Cymbalta. However, Parnate may cause you to lose your appetite or to be unable to eat due to nausea. Your doctor can prescribe medication to help settle your stomach or suggest home remedies. For those whose depression has already led to loss of weight and appetite, further weight loss on Parnate can be particularly dangerous or upsetting. It is crucial that you be in close touch with your physician while taking an MAOI antidepressant. It may be necessary to take extra measures to increase your appetite to prevent Parnate weight loss. According to an article in the February 1. AFP also suggests avoiding drinking much liquid with or just before meals, as it can increase fullness and keep you from eating enough food. Moderate daily exercise can also help boost your appetite, as well as help alleviate depression. Those taking Parnate have often already tried other, newer antidepressants to no avail. However, there are new drugs being marketed all the time, and you never know which of them might effectively treat your depression. Talking to your psychiatrist regularly about the latest research may help you find a newer, better drug than Parnate. Electroconvulsive therapy, while also fraught with side effects, can be effective for some severely depressed patients who prefer not to take medication or who cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressants. I have digenerative disc disease and my neirologist just prescribed topamax, he said it would help with the pain and tingling but could result in weight loss. Do not take ZOLOFT if you: Take a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI), including linezolid or methylene blue, or if you stopped taking an MAOI in the last 2 weeks. And when it gets too full, you end up missing the emails you want to see because they’ve somehow gotten buried in a pile of emails you don’t. Now there’s a new app that wants to provide a robotic helping hand to make navigating through the chaos easier. Called Astro, the Android and i. OS app has an AI assistant built in that reminds you to respond to emails from friends while also suggesting you unsubscribe from those promotional emails you never open. I’ve been using it for a little over a month, and have been really impressed. On the surface it’s just like any other email app. Your messages are divided up into two inboxes, a “Priority” one full of messages it thinks you want to see, and an “Other” box with everything else. The app also offers some other features like email tracking and snoozing. That’s great and all, but the magic really comes from the app’s built- in digital assistant. When you tap into that, the assistant makes smart suggestions of things you should do based on how it sees you’re interacting with your inbox. For instance, today Astro asked me if I wanted it to automatically archive messages from Grubhub because it looks like I haven’t been reading them (or more like I didn’t even realize I was subscribed to them), and suggested that I add my friend Allison to my VIP list because it looks like we’re interacting frequently. Yes, I could have done through my inbox and figured all that out myself. But would I have? Probably not. And those were questions I could answer while I was riding in a Lyft to meet a friend. This week, the app added Slack integration. So, if you’re like me and have your face buried in a Slack channel all day long, the app can let you know when an important email comes in. They also took things a step further to make Astro’s search bar work with Slack, so if you can’t remember whether you had a convo with a coworker in Slack or via email (the answer is always the opposite of what you think it is) you can search both at once. Astro also works with Alexa, so you can have her read through messages and even send quick replies hands free while you’re still in bed or cooking breakfast in the morning. And it’s all free. You can give it a try here for Android and here for i. A MCHC blood test could be ordered for someone who has signs of fatigue or weakness, when there is an infection, is bleeding or bruising easily or when there is. Blood Types Explained. Each individual's blood is made up of four major components; red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets. The red blood cells (RBCs) transport oxygen to other body cells, white blood cells (WBC) maintain and uphold the body's defense mechanisms, platelets aim to help the process of blood clotting and plasma is where the protein of the body resides. The blood type (or the group) that a person belongs to, is determined by the red blood cells of the body. Antigens are tiny markers that are present on the surface of these red blood cells, and these antigens are unique for every individual. These antigens help medical professionals determine a person's blood group and during blood transfusions, these antigens need to be matched correctly. Failure to do so, can result in a lot of complications during the blood transfusion process. The ABO System. The ABO method is the system that is used to determine a person's blood type; a person who has A antigens or B antigens covering the blood cells, will belong to group A or B respectively. And similarly, a person who has none of the antigens will belong to group O and a person with both the antigens will belong to the AB group. The inheritance of blood types from parents is the primary factor in the determination of an individuals blood group, and the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) recognizes around 3. The importance of the antigens comes into play during the process of blood transfusion. People with type A blood group will also have antibodies against type B antigens, and vice versa. These two antigens cannot co- exist if their respective anti- bodies are present in the human body. Type O blood group has antibodies against A antigens as well as B antigens and type AB blood group has no antibodies at all. The Rh System. There is another system in place that helps in describing a person's blood type. This is known as the Rh blood system. This system is primarily based on five Rhesus antigens - C, c, D, E and e, and helps place people in two different blood types (Rh positive and Rh negative). D antigen is the most important of these as it is very likely to cause an immune reaction. If you hear a medical professional mention the term Rh factor, he is referring to the D antigen. The presence of this D antigen on the surface of your blood cells means you are Rh+ (positive), and its absence implies that you are Rh- (negative). These two blood describing systems are used simultaneously to describe a person's blood type. For example, if an individual has blood type O- (O negative), this means that the person does not have A antigens, B antigens and D antigens on his blood cells. A person with a negative blood type cannot receive blood of the positive type and the opposite also holds true. The blood types explained in the following table shows an estimate by the ISBT about the breakup of different types of blood groups and gives the blood types percentage in the world's population. Majority of the people around the world have type O positive blood. Blood Type and Rh Factor. Percentage of People. A +3. 4%A - 6%B +8%B - 1%AB +3%AB - 1%O +4. O - 7%Importance of Blood Types. The significance of blood groups comes into play during the process of blood transfusion. Once we understand the different blood types, this fact becomes clear. If an incompatible blood type is transfused in your body, it might prove to be fatal. There are a few combinations of blood groups that must not be transfused into a human body at any cost whatsoever. Knowledge of blood groups also helps you prevent blood disorders. The following table will make this clear and also show us different blood donor types. You need to look at the rows of the table and locate your blood group, and then the subsequent boxes of that row will show you which blood groups can donate blood to you without any adverse side effects. You can also locate your blood group by looking at the columns of the table and then determine which blood groups you are permitted to donate to. Compatible With. Blood Type. From the table you can make the following observations. People with type AB+ can receive blood from any person, as their group is compatible with every other blood group. People with type O- can receive blood from no other group except their own. Conversely, AB+ can only donate blood to another person with AB+ group. Lastly, people with O- blood group are universal donors and can have their blood transfused into a person with any group. Rare blood types can cause a lot of problems for blood banks and hospitals during an emergency. Even geographical locations and atmospheric conditions play an important role in deciding a person's blood group and as a result, certain ethnic groups will have the same blood type in almost all cases. What to Eat and Avoid. Disclaimer: Results are not guaranteed*** and may vary from person to person***. Have you heard of the special diet that is recommended to follow for good overall health depending on your blood type? The Blood Type Diet is based on eating specific foods that allow for better digestion, increase energy levels, prevent disease and illnesses, and help to lose weight. We will take a close look at this controversial diet, particularly, the O- Positive blood type diet. The Blood Type Diet, also known as the Blood Group Diet, was first created by naturopath physician, Dr. D’Adamo. He wrote the book Eat Right 4 Your Type to outline how your type of blood chemically reacts to the food you eat. Our blood type refers to the type of antigens, or proteins, within the blood cells and plasma. There are eight different blood types that fall under the four major blood groups. The presence and absence of these antigens determine the type of blood we have. It should be noted there are many experts who feel there is not sufficient scientific evidence supporting this type of diet. Katherine Zeratsky is a dietician at the Mayo Clinic.“There’s no sound scientific evidence that the so- called blood type diet is any more effective or any more beneficial for weight loss than is any other diet. If you’re trying to lose weight, focus on developing healthy eating and exercise habits that you can follow for a lifetime,” Zeratsky states on the clinic’s web site. Ad. What Is the Blood Type O- Positive Diet? Based on this diet, blood type O- positive individuals should consume organic lean meat and poultry, fruits, and vegetables. This high protein and low carbohydrate diet recommends limiting or avoiding wheat products, dairy, caffeine and alcohol. This diet group is referred to as “The Hunter” and closely follows the lines of the Paleo diet, theorizing that ancestors of O- positive people only ate what they could hunt or gather at the time. Regular exercise of high- functioning workouts is linked to this diet. What Foods to Eat and Avoid for Blood Type O- Positive. To get the best results of any diet, it is recommended to follow the guidelines closely and avoid straying from the suggested foods. The Blood Type O- Positive Diet is no different. To fully understand how your O- positive blood type may affect the foods you eat, continue reading the following outline of the Dr. D’Adamo diet, which details what foods to eat for the O- positive blood type. Meats. According to this diet, blood type O- positive individuals digest meat easily and the iodine in most seafood helps with functioning of the thyroid. It is recommended to have a high- protein diet of organic lean meats such as lamb, beef, veal, venison, and mutton. You can also enjoy cold- water fish such as trout, herring, tuna, cod, and mackerel. On occasion, you can eat lobster, shrimp, clams, mussels, crab, flounder, and mahi- mahi. Avoid the meat of goose and pork such as bacon and ham. Fish to avoid include catfish, smoked salmon, caviar, octopus, pickled herring, barracuda, and conch. Vegetables. Maintain weight, reduce blood clots, and have good health with vitamin- and mineral- enriched leafy greens such as kale, lettuce, and broccoli. Blood type O- positive patients should also eat onions, pumpkins, turnips, dandelion, red peppers, okra, artichokes, garlic, horseradish, parsley, seaweed, and ginger root. Avoid Brussels sprouts, spinach, cabbage, corn, cauliflower, potatoes, eggplant, alfalfa sprouts, mushrooms, and pickled vegetables to prevent thyroid, insulin, blood clots, and digestive issues. Fruit. With this diet, type O- positive individuals can use fruits to help with regulating stomach acid, which tends to be a major issue for this blood type. Enjoy eating cherries, figs, plums, and prunes and sporadically eat raspberries, cranberries, and gooseberries. You can also enjoy apples, peaches, grapes, pears, and bananas up to two times per week. Avoid potential mold- containing melons such as honeydew and cantaloupe, as well as acid- producing oranges, rhubarb, kiwifruit, strawberries, and blackberries. Coconut can also cause issues for O- positive types. Legumes. It may seem tricky to follow, but there are beans and legumes that can help O- positive blood types, while others can cause issues (mainly involving the thyroid). You can consume green string beans, black beans, and adzuki beans. Avoid green peas, lentils, soybeans, peanuts, and peanut butter itself. Dairy. While it has been suggested dairy products should be avoided, this blood type can enjoy butter, soymilk, goat cheese, feta cheese, and mozzarella cheese in small amounts. Other Foods. Cooking oils of sesame and canola oil, and breads prepared with sprouted grains such as barley, spelt, amaranth, millet, and rye, with rice, kasha, and kamut products are safe for this blood type. Avoid corn, cottonseed, peanut, and safflower oils as well as cereal grain products, cashews, brazil nuts, pistachios, and poppy seeds. O- Positive Blood Type Diet Meal Plan. We have compiled a sample meal plan for one day based on how you can eat right for your blood type O- Positive. Breakfast 2 slices of Ezekiel bread toasted. Butter. 6 ounces of vegetable juice. Lunch. 6 ounces of organic roast beef. Spinach salad. 1 sliced apple or pineapple. Dinner. Lamb. Asparagus. Broccoli, steamed. Sweet potato. Fresh fruit. Snacks Twice a day you can enjoy a snack of fruit, raw vegetables, roasted seeds or nuts, or gluten- free cake with a cup of herbal tea or water. Other Things to Know about Blood Type O- Positive Diet. Aside from the particular foods suggested for O- positive blood types, this diet also recommends followers avoid the use of caffeine and most alcoholic beverages, while enjoying wine, teas, and water. The diet is aimed to balance brain chemicals such as dopamine, further suggesting that individuals using the diet can prevent substance abuse and reduce stress and anxiety. Exercise is suggested to comprise of 1. The O- Positive Blood Type Diet is similar to other diets on the market in that there are concerns among the medical community and many experts call for more scientific research to be done. Following this diet may strengthen vulnerable health issues and weaken others where required nutrients are needed. Dr. D’Adamo created the diet to target the impact blood type has on the digestion of certain foods in our body. Any new dietary regimen should be discussed with a health professional, especially if you have an existing health condition.
